Mortality and Morbidity Patterns of Very Low Birth Weight Newborns in Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Meta-Analysis Study |
|
| چکیده انگلیسی مقاله |
Context: Preterm and low-birth-weight are of the most common causes of mortality and critical disabilities in newborns. Although progress in neonatal cares has improved survival and quality of life in developed countries, but still mortality and morbidity due to prematurity are high in developing and underdeveloped countries such as Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). Objectives: The objective of study was to evaluate mortality and morbidity among Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) and Very Preterm (VP) Neonates in EMR. Data Source: A systematic search was conducted in CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Current Contents, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO, Thomson Reuters, (SID) and Medical Library (MedLib) and regional WHO database to detect relevant studies published in 1996 to 2016. Study selection: English published studies from EMR countries which reporting outcomes of VLBW and VP were considered. Finally 32 full text studies were included. Data extraction: data relevant to selected outcomes of VLBW and VP including mortality, short term and long term morbidities were extracted. Result: Meta prevalence of mortality among VLBW newborns were calculated 32.0%; it was heterogenic based on Asian or African countries (23% vs. 55%). Pooled odds ratio of mortality among VLBW newborns was estimated 2.41. The most prevalent comorbidity in VLBW and VP newborns allocated to septicemia and Neuro Developmental Delay (NDD), and the rarest belonged to Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) and Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) respectively. The most restrictive of this study was lack of suitable studies and adequate sample sizes. Conclusion: It would seem that indicators in EMR should be evaluated independently in Asian and African countries. Septicemia, as relatively curable morbidity, is the most prevalent comorbidity among VLBW infants.
