A Review on Medicinal Plants with Antileishmanial Activities |

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by various species of the Leishmania parasites. A proper vaccine or drug to inhibit these parasite as well as a suitable chemical method to definitely fight with this disease without side effects has not been provided so far. The use of medicinal herbs for the treatment of many diseases, especially parasitic diseases, dates back to prehistoric times. This is a study review on the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis with medicinal plants. It was designed due to the prevalence of cutaneous leishmaniasis and the inability to fully control it with chemical drugs as well as the increase in the number of reports on drug resistance and contradictory results on the side effects of chemical drugs. The papers indexed in PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases were used for the review. Due to the variety of climate and a highly diverse flora in Iran, this country is a great place to find the active herbal ingredients in various indigenous plants and extract them to produce such materials in large amounts and on an industrial scale. We reviewed and evaluated a number of plants that can be used to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran and in other countries from the past to present. |
