Background and purpose: The phenomenon of aging is faced with a decrease in performance in physical and psychological dimensions, which has a great impact on the elderly's quality of life and functional independence. Osteoporosis is a chronic and metabolic bone disease that is very common in older adults, especially in women. Osteoporosis causes weakening and fragility of bones and limits the activities of daily living of the elderly women. Considering that most women are the main focus of the family, and osteoporosis is also much more common in women than men, so this study aims to determine the physical performance of elderly people with osteoporosis who refer to selected medical training centers of Iran University of Medical Sciences in It was 2018-2019. Methods: The present study was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The research samples include 130 elderly women over 60 years of age who referred to the selected medical training centers of Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2018-2019. After obtaining the written informed consent, the subjects were included in the study by consecutive sampling method according to the study inclusion criteria. The time frame of the sampling process lasted for four months from August 2019 to December 2019. Data collection tools were (AMTs), demographic profile form, Barthel's Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Lawton-Brody Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) questionnaires. After completing the questionnaires by the researcher through interviews to the subjects, the data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 20 software. In addition, in this study, the significance level of p≤0.05 was considered. Findings: This study was conducted with the aim of "determining physical performance (in terms of daily activities and tools of life) in elderly women with osteoporosis referring to selected educational and treatment centers of Iran University of Medical Sciences" and its relationship with the individual characteristics and disease of the women under study. The average age of the research subjects was 67.5 ± 5.7 years. The level of education of the participants was 31.54% illiterate, 49.23% below diploma and 14.62% diploma and the rest i.e. 4.62% were university graduates. The majority of women, 72.4% were married and 89.2% were housewives. Also, the results showed that 97.7% of the studied women lived in the city and 70% lived with their husbands. Regarding the characteristics of the disease, 96.9% had a history of osteoporosis and the type of osteoporosis was 63.8% osteopenia. The duration of osteoporosis was 65.9% more than 5 years and 67.7% had no history of hospitalization due to bone fracture. Regarding the daily activities of women with osteoporosis, none of them had dependence in eating and the most dependence was in urination with 45.4%. In the case of instrumental activities of life, the ability to buy was 76.2% and the lowest activity related to the ability to manage the use of one's own medicines was 0.7%. The score of performing daily life activities is significantly related to age (p=0.024). The level of education (p=0.024) had a statistically significant relationship. Performing instrumental activities also had a statistically significant relationship with age (P=0.013), education level and employment (P=0.001). Conclusion: According to the results of this research, more family and social support from the society is necessary for this group of vulnerable population with older age, old age and low performance in basic life activities (such as helping to climb the stairs and urination problem) Is. Because one of the goals and challenges of nurses, especially geriatric nurses, is to know more about the issues and problems of this group of elderly people in terms of care and education, based on holistic nursing care in nursing clinical services, the need to support the very old elderly who have a disease and disorder. Serious diseases such as osteoporosis, effective health policy and planning with interagency government coordination and voluntary and charitable institutions. This can play a decisive role in improving the health of the elderly and realizing the concept of "healthy and active aging" and improving the quality of life. |
