Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) increasing at an alarming rate worldwide, and psychological risk factors are also involved in the morbidity and spread of the disease. The present study aims to determine the effectiveness of emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT) on affective temperaments in patients with Coronary artery disease. Methods: This semi-experimental study was conducted on two groups with pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design in 34 couples, one of the partners had CAD, in Mashhad, Iran-2022, were selected via two-stage cluster sampling and allocated into two groups of intervention(16 couples) and control (18 couples) by permuted block randomization. An emotionally focused couple therapy based on the Healing Hearts Together (HHT) educational program was performed in the intervention group during eight weekly, 2-hour sessions. The control group received only routine care. Data were collected using the demographic questionnaire, and the temperament evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego auto questionnaire (TEMPS-A) before, after, and two months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, independent t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA in SPSS26 software. Results: The study showed emotionally focused couple therapy significantly decreased the mean score of irritable, anxious, and depressed temperaments but significantly increased the mean score of hyperthymic temperament dimension in the post-test and follow–up, but the changes in the follow-up stage were less than the post-test stage (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the mean score of cyclothymic temperament dimension in the intervention and control groups in the post-test and follow–up (p>0.05). Conclusion: Using emotionally focused couple therapy in couples can improve affective temperaments in patients with coronary artery disease. Emotionally focused couple therapy in couples whose one of them has coronary artery disease, can be effective in health maintenance and promotion and the quality of life in the patients with coronary artery disease. |
