Background: Cardiovascular disease can effect on quality of life and post operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) fallowing cardiac surgery Objective: the current study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of quality of life and POCD along with underlying factors in patients after cardiac surgery in order to improve the quality of life, duration of hospitalization and better outcome with lower mortality rate. Material and Methods: this is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted on 183 patients who underwent cardiac surgery. In this study a MMSE questionnaire about cognitive disorders before surgery and after recovery was completed for the patients. Quality of life was also measured using the SF-36 questionnaire, which was completed by the patients before surgery and 6 months after surgery. Results: This study showed there was a positive correlation in MMSE score before and after surgery (P=0.006). Also, there was a significant decline in MMSE score after surgery (from 24.91 to 9.67) and MMSE score decline after surgery was negatively related with smoking habit(P=0.011), time of hospitalization at ICU, cerebral oximetry indexes less than50%, EF index less than 35%, and on- pump BP less than 50mmHg(P=0.00). Also, all eight items in SF-36 questionnaire had improved significantly after surgery compared to counterpart items before surgery (P=0.001) and we didn’t find any statistically significant relation between demographic characteristics of patients and SF-36 score. Conclusion: This study showed MMSE score decline after cardiac surgery and quality of life improve significantly after cardiac surgery. |
