Design and evaluation of missed nursing care formation model in cardiac patients: A multi-phase mixed method study |

Introduction: The cardiac care unit is one of the sensitive professional departments in which nurses play an important role in providing critical cardiac care. So the missed nursing care in these units can be harmful to heart patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to design and evaluate the missed nursing care model in cardiac care units.
Methodology: Combined and multi-phase design was carried out in four stages between 2021 and 2023: The first stage was carried out by the Scoping Review method. In the second stage, with a qualitative approach and using the conventional content analysis method, through 11 interviews. In the third stage, the results of literature review and qualitative content analysis were combined and the initial model of the formation of missed nursing care in cardiac care units was designed. The fourth stage is with a quantitative approach and by using 6 questionnaires which were completed by 203 nurses in cardiac care units. For data analysis Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple linear regression model was used.
Results: in the qualitative phase, 5 themes of nurse's job profile, work-life conflict, nurse's professional competence, cardiac working environment atmosphere, and organizational management was introduced as influential factors on missed nursing care in cardiac care units. The findings of the quantitative phase showed that in total, 41.6% of the variance of the missed nursing care variable is explained by the variables in the model.
Conclusion: Paying attention to the personal and professional characteristics of, providing solutions to reduce the amount of conflict between work and life, trying to improve professional qualifications of nurses, to improve the working environment of cardiac care and to develop the performance level and skills of organization managers in controlling the amount of missed nursing care in cardiac units, should be considered by the authorities. |
