Parenting Style, Childhood Trauma, and Adulthood Depression: The Mediating Role of Rumination |

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the roles of both maternal "care" and "overprotection" factors and the way they are combined to develop rumination as well as studying the various types of childhood traumas simultaneously with parenting styles as developers of depression. Method: This research is a retrospective study with a causal-comparative design. 175 (Mage =21years, SD = 2.75, range 18-35) students of Alborz Medical University, Tehran University, and Kharazmi University have been selected using purposive sampling method. They were asked to answer the 2nd ed. of Beck depression instrument, rumination response scale, parental bonding instrument, and childhood trauma questionnaire. The data were analyzed by ANOVA, path analysis, mediation analysis, and correlation calculations using SPSS-23 and Amos software. Result: The mediating role of rumination between parenting styles (p< 0.02) and depression (p< 0.001) was significant. Also results showed that both parenting styles and childhood traumas and also their interaction can lead to the development of rumination and depression (p< 0.001). The pathways of the effects were different; low mother's care surprisingly plays an indirect role in this process which means that it will lead to depression and rumination only if emotional abuse is induced in child. However, overprotection can directly lead to these conditions. Conclusion: Paying attention to parenting styles, childhood traumas, and their interaction in order to prevent rumination and depression through this process is important as the direct and indirect effects of parenting behaviors were shown. |
