Introduction: Facial nerve paralysis may cause disfigurement of the face. This is turn may result in psychological disturbances and isolation due to the importance the society may attach to physical appearance. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between psychological symptoms, age, severity of symptoms and societal integration in people with Facial Nerve Paralysis (FNP). Method: The study was a cross sectional study involving patients with FNP approved by the research ethics committees of Kano state ministry of health and Aminu Kano teaching hospital. The instruments used in the study are hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) to assess psychological distress, House Brackmann Scale (HBS) to assess the severity of facial nerve damage and the Facial nerve palsy integration register (FAIR) to assess community integration of patients with PNF. Result: Thirty seven patients with FNP (16 males and 21 females) with age range, 14-70 years participated in the study. The main findings of this study were that, there are differences in societal integration between males and females (in favour of the males), severity of FNP decreases as societal integration of the patients increases, and as age increases the societal integration also decreases. Additionally, there was also no difference in the integration between single and married. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between depression and societal integration; but, no significant correlation exists between anxiety and societal integration of the patients. Similarly, the study showed a moderate negative significant correlation between the degree of disfigurement (severity) and societal integration of the patients. Conclusion: Psychological symptoms, severity of facial nerve palsy and age can have influence on societal integration in people with facial nerve paralysis. |
