Factor Structure and Psychometric Properties of the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) in an Iranian University Student Female’s Sample |

Objective: Body image is a complex and multifaceted construct, encompassing at least perceptual, affective, cognitive, and possibly behavioral aspects of body experience. In contemporary Iranian society, increasingly the major focus has been on the body's appearance, in particular on body shape and weight. Current societal standards for female beauty excessively emphasizes the desirability of thinness and ideal accepted by most women but impossible for most to achieve. This body image concerns can be measured by using The Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ-AS). Aims of the present study are to test the factorial structure and psychometric properties of the MBSRQ in Iranian female's student. Method: The MBSRQ-AS was answered by N= 496 students participants aged 16 to 39 that randomly selected from the female students of Tehran University from 70 disciplines. Results: The Exploratory factor analysis methods were used to compute the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire factorial validity. Reliability estimations are reported. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to check the internal consistency of MBSRQ-As. Using principal component analysis after the varimax rotation showed that the MBSRQ-AS is composed of five dimensions of Appearance Orientation, Appearance Evaluation, Overweight Preoccupation, Self-Classified Weight and Body Areas Satisfaction scales and MBSRQ-AS subscales had a good internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the accuracy of the extracted factors. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results of this study, provided strong evidence for the reliability and validity of the MBSRQ-AS as a multidimensional tool about body image among Iranian students. |
