Body Image and its relation to Self Esteem among Amputation Cases at Prosthetics Center in Hilla City/Iraq |

Objectives: Throughout history, peoples live through the vicissitudes of time, from situations of security, peace, recovery and development to situations of war and the vicissitudes of nature and its cruelty over the diversity, intensity, duration or shortness of life.The study aimed to assess the self-esteem of patients who are amputees in Hilla City at Babylon Province, in Middle Iraq. Methods: A descriptive correlational study is conducted to determine body image and self-esteem among amputated patients and to identify if the body image has been associated with self-esteem. By non-probability purposive sample composed of 200 subjects from both male and female their ages range from (25-35), (36-46), (47-57), (58-68), (69 and above) years old is collected through the modified questionnaire (Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ), Rosenberg Self- Esteem (RSE) scale) and interview with patients individually base, data were collected and analysis was done for the descriptive and inferential statistic. Results The results shows that the more participants is male patients and their aged between (58-68) years old. The lower limbs have records the most amputation site caused by war for less than five years. The majority of amputated patients were negative responses towards their body image. As well as, depicts (39%) as a majority responses of amputated patients were never feel with their self-esteem. There was a high association (reverse correlation) between the body image and self-esteem at p-value < 0.01. Discussion Our analysis reflects amputated patients see themselves negatively which leads to a lack of self-esteem, whereas, a feel of negative body image has been affected self-esteem. Hospitals need to be provided with specialists in the field of mental health and psychological therapy to increase the chance for early intervention in the psychological treatment of these cases, and provide programs to guide cases of amputation to reduce the psychological problems of amputation. |
