عنوان انگلیسی Who is the Abandoned Suicide Survivor? A Scoping Review on the Postvention Strategies and Impact of Suicide on Fellow Patients Exposed to Suicide in Clinical Settings
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Background: Suicide causes a combination of trauma and grief affecting other patients in therapeutic settings. There is a sparse amount of literature discussing the bereavement of co-patients after the suicide of a fellow patient. This scoping review aimed to review the existing literature on both the effect of suicide and the recommended intervention for co-patients in the aftermath of a suicide. Methods: This review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) framework. A medical librarian performed systematic searches of Medline, Embase, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library on December 22, 2020. Searches of Google and Google Scholar were performed for the grey literature. English articles published from the year 2000 through 2020 the present were included and studies from non-clinical settings were excluded. Two independent reviewers completed all the screening, full-text review, data extraction, and analysis. Results: The search yielded 873 records. Eleven peer-reviewed articles and five guidelines met the inclusion criteria. The variables affecting a patient's reaction were identified as: nature of the relationship with co-patient, level of exposure to the suicide event, the character of the suicide and the patient's vulnerability. Immediate postvention recommendations emphasized risk assessment and establishing safety while short-term postvention aimed at the emotional recovery and healing of the co-patients. Conclusion: This is the first study that has systematically reviewed postvention management and the impact of suicide on co-patients. Major gaps identified were the absence of the patient's voice in understanding the impact of the event and the low level of evidence for postvention interventions. Further studies are needed to determine effective interventions to support this high-risk population.
