عنوان انگلیسی The Effect of Eight Weeks of Resistance and Aerobic Training on Selected Functional Capacities in Women with Multiple Sclerosis and Depression
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Purpose: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that has had a very high prevalence all over the world in recent years. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the effect of aerobic and resistance exercises on selected functional capacities and cognitive indicators in depressed women with multiple sclerosis. Method: The current study was semi-experimental and followed by a pre-test and post-test design. In this survey, 30 women with multiple sclerosis (25_50 years old) with an Expanded Disability Status Scale range between 0-5.5, and depression among those who visited the neurology clinic Medical Sciences of Guilan (Bethat) were selected. The study included a control group (n=10) and, two types of intervention: resistance (n=10) and, aerobic (n=10) exercises. To evaluate the variables of stress, depression, fatigue, and functional capacities, the following questionnaires and tests were used: Perceived Stress Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory, Fatigue Severity Scale, Timed Up and Go (TUG), 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT), 10 Meter Walk Test (10MWT), and 30-Second Chair Stand (30s-CST) tests. Aerobic exercises were performed at an intensity of 40_60% of the maximum heart rate for 10_30 minutes. Home-based resistance training, including a hypertrophy phase (4 weeks), strength and power phase (4 weeks) was, conducted with an intensity of (0.5_1.5%) of the subjects' body weight. The duration of the training for both groups was 8 weeks. The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures in SPSS version 26 software, with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. Result: The results indicated that both resistance and aerobic training had a significant intra-group effect on various factors (p ≤ 0.05). Specifically, Perceived Stress (P=0.01), Depression level (P=0.001), 6-Minute Walk Test (P=0.001), 10 Meter Walk Test (P=0.01) and 30-Second Chair Stand (P=0.001) showed statistically significant improvements. Regarding the inter-group effect, significant differences were observed in depression and functional strength of lower limbs (30s-CST) among the three groups (p ≤ 0.05). Noteworthy variations were also found in fatigue, and the timed up-and-go test. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, it seems that both resistance and aerobic exercises can be considered effective interventions for improving depression, perceived stress, and functional capacity in individuals with multiple sclerosis.
