Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Oral Health Care among Patients with Fixed Orthodontic Appliance: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Yazd, Iran |

Background: Oral health is the key factor required for uninterrupted orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to investigate knowledge, attitude and practice of patients with fixed orthodontic appliance, about oral health care. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 201 patients referred to Orthodontics department of Yazd Dental faculty were recruited by convenience sampling between August 2021 and March 2022. A valid and reliable questionnaire was used which contained demographic information, 7 knowledge questions, 7 attitudinal and 8 practical questions regarding oral health. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 software, T-test and ANOVA. Results: The mean age of participants was 19.65 ± 6.03 with an age range of 10-37 years. The participants had a moderate knowledge and poor practice. No significant correlation was seen between the mean knowledge and practice scores of patients with (P-value>0.05). Demographic variables mainly did not have a significant effect on the distribution of answers to attitudinal questions. Conclusion: knowledge in the field of oral health among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment was evaluated as "moderate" and their practice as "poor". Some individual attitudes, such as having a negative attitude towards orthodontic treatment as an unsafe treatment in pregnancy and the impossibility of orthodontic treatment in adulthood, need to be corrected. Due to the need for improvement of patients' knowledge, attitude and practice about oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment, educational interventions are suggested. |
