Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Knee Osteoarthritis in Contra-Lateral Limb after Limb Amputation. |

Objective: To determine the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis and associated risk factors in the contralateral limb after lower limb amputation.
Methods: This cross sectional survey recruited a sample of N=500 lower limb amputees using prosthesis for at least 1 year using convenience sampling from Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic & Orthotic Sciences, Peshawar, Pakistan (PIPOS) Rehabilitation Services Program (PRSP) and its satellite centers across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sample included either gender aged 20 to 80 years.. Basic demographic sheet & Risk factors questionnaire & ACR guidelines diagnostic knee osteoarthritis criteria like using history, physical examination and radiographic findings were used for data collection. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Studies (SPSS) Version- 21. T-test and Anova statistics were utilized to see any association with p<0.05 taken as significant..
Results: Current study revealed a prevalence of Osteoarthritis of 131(26.2%) with higher prevalence in males 86(65.5%) aged 51-80 years (99(75.6%) and 99(75.6%) being married with predominance of Trans-tibial amputees 87(66.4%). Sustained knee bending was the most prevalent risk factor present in 127(96.9%) (OR 31.07) followed by Past history of painful knee injury in 117(89.3%) (OR 12.00) , sitting on the floor for home activities in 106(80.9%) (OR 8.00) & occupation with knee use in 129(98.5%) (OR 7.25).
Discussion: A high prevalence of osteoarthritis of 26.2% in the sound limb in lower limb amputees is present being more common in males, of 51-80 years of age, married with trans-tibial amputation on contralateral side. Common risk factors include sustained knee bending, past history of painful knee injury, sitting on floor for home activities and occupations with knee use. |
