EFFECT OF QUADRATUS LUMBORUM MUSCLE ENERGY TECHNIQUE ON LOW BACK PAIN AND DIAPHRAGMATIC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL OUTCOMES. |

Background: Quadratus lumborum is included in list of accessory muscles of expiration. This muscle contracts to depress ribs. It stabilizes diaphragm for respiration. A tight/ stiff Quadratus Lumborum prevents rib cage from fully expanding to take deep breath and has pull over the diaphragm and surrounding tissues. This affects chest expansion and breathing pattern. This leads to adaptation of faulty posture and causes abnormality in breathing pattern. Objective: To assess for immediate effect of Muscle Energy Technique (MET) of Quadratus Lumborum on Pain, Diaphragm activity in individuals with non specific low back pain. Methodology: 65 individuals with non specific low back pain were included. Two groups of SEBQ<11 and SEBQ>11 were made and pre intervention assessment of NPRS, Surface EMG diaphragm, PImax and Chest expansion was assessed. MET to Quadratus Lumborum was given and post measurements of same were assessed. Result: NPRS of both groups had statistical significance (p<0.0001), Amplitude in SEBQ>11 was significant (p<0.0166), Pimax in both groups were highly significant (p=0.0001). Conclusion: There is influence of MET of Quadratus Lumborum on pain and lung function in non specific low back pain patients.
