Depression occurs among the elderly leading to increased use of medical facilities, adversely affecting quality of life and increasing mortality. Less studies have been conducted to explore the aspects that contribute to depression among the elderly. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that triggered depression in the elderly. This research used descriptive analysis with a cross-sectional design. A total of 247 participants answered a questionnaire containing socio-demographic information and the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15). The data was analyzed for correlation using the test for chi-squares. There was a significant relationship between insurance, occupation and depression in rural communities in central Java, Indonesia with p-values of 0.018 and 0.03. Insurance and occupation affect elderly people preparing for old age with sufficient finances with old age savings so they can be financially strong. The population need to prepare for old age by calculating their retirement fund needs, saving and investing. and have insurance for pension and health fund protection. |
