عنوان انگلیسی Disruptive Behaviour and its Clinical and Psychological Impacts among Physicians and Nurses: A 2020 Cross -Sectional Study in the Emergency Departments of Alborz University of Medical Sciences Hospitals
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله
Background: Disruptive behavior (DB) can have a negative impact on patient safety and workforce satisfaction.
Purpose: Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence, and the clinical and psychological outcomes of DB among physicians and nurses in emergency departments.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 105 participants, comprising 33 physicians and 72 nurses working in emergency departments of two educational hospitals of Alborz University of Medical Sciences, were enrolled participated through convenience sampling between May and June 2020. Participants filled out the demographic information and the DBs’ questionnaire. SPSS V.20 was used to analyze the data, using descriptive statistics indices and independent t-test to compare the participants’ responses.
Results: The findings indicated that DBs were prevalent in emergency departments. All respondents reported having witnessed DBs in their hospitals. The primary barrier identified by survey participants in the reporting process was the perception that "Nothing ever changes" (47.6%). The majority of physicians and nurses (81%) indicated that DBs can have a significant impact on patient outcomes. The results revealed that there was a significant difference between mean score of nurses’ and physicians’ responses to taking nurses DB seriously (t=-13.05, p<0.001), and the seriousness of the impact of DB’s on patient outcomes (t=-5.75, p<0.001).
Conclusion: DBs were identified as a threat to employees' health and nursing care quality due to their interference with professional communication among staff. Addressing these behaviors requires practical and effective interventions, including conceptualizing disruptive behaviors for stakeholders, increasing awareness among hospital administrators, developing policies and rules, and monitoring rule implementation.
