Assessing the Cognitive Features and Guessability Score of Laboratory Safety Signs Among Pharmacy Students |

Background and purpose: Correct recognition of hazards can be a suitable measure to prevent injuries in laboratory environments. To consider this approach, the use of safety signs is especially important for students who lack sufficient safety knowledge and work or study in laboratories. Although safety signs seem simple, misunderstanding them can put people at risk. Materials and Methods: In this study, comprehensibility of twenty-two commonly used safety signs was evaluated by 55 pharmacy students. All pharmacy students (20-30 years old) in practical courses at Mazandaran University were chosen using the census method Two measures of guessability score and cognitive features were used to assess safety symbols. Guessability score were measured by a five-option answering system with correct, partly correct and wrong responses. Cognitive features also five criteria including familiarity, concreteness, complexity, meaningfulness, and semantic closeness, which the subjects’ responses ranged from 0 to 100. SPSS software, version 23, was applied for data analysis. Data were analyzed through analysis descriptive, box plot and spearman correlation coefficient. All tests were conducted with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The guessability score results indicated that the lowest score was 1.08% for the general mandatory action sign, and the highest score was 100% for no smoking. Despite the varying responses, two signs of general mandatory action sign and disconnect before carrying out maintenance or repair had significantly scattered coefficients of variation. According to the overall scores for cognitive features, the value of the simplicity criteria was the highest (85.73%). Conclusion: Regarding the common characteristics of the participants, the results demonstrated that if the safety symbols are not accompanied by the text or are not seen frequently, it is difficult to understand them correctly. |
