Background: One of the challenges of healthcare systems in today's societies is providing effective end-of-life care to patients. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine factors related to the performance of the Intensive Care Unit )ICU( nurses in end-of-life care in educational medical centers in Rasht City, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, we included all 220 ICU nurses with at least 6 months of work experience in the Rasht City , North of Iran in educational medical centers in 2022. The data collection tool was a two-part questionnaire: personal-occupational characteristics and a standard questionnaire for assessing ICU nurses' performance in end-of-life care. This study used an independent t test and Pearson correlation coefficient correlation coefficient, and a multiple linear regression model for data analyses. Results: Based on the results, 83.6% of the samples were women, 92.7% had bachelor's education, and 50.9% were married. The mean performance score of ICU nurses in end-of-life care was 180.31±5.1. The highest and lowest scores were related to the managing patients' signs and symptoms field (43.7±6.4) and the spiritual care field (11.9±5.1). Based on the regression model, the total performance score of nurses regarding end-of-life care in nurses with master's education was significantly 22.28 units lower than nurses with bachelor's education (b= -22.28و 95% CI; -38.62 to -5.96, P=0.008). The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.05, which indicates that 5.0% of the variations in the total performance score of nurses regarding end-of-life care are explained by their personal and occupational characteristics. Conclusion: Based on the findings, the mean score of nurses' overall performance regarding end-of-life care was high. The highest possible performance of nurses in the ICU in end-of-life care can improve the provision of services for patients and their families. |
