The oil prices relationship between interest rates and the unemployment rate in Iran |

The price of oil is one of the significant variables that plays an important role in determining the economic situation of each country. In this study we investigate the oil prices relationship with interest rates and unemployment rate in Iran during the 1981-2013 periods using of Johansen co-integration and Toda Yamamoto causality test. Johansen method results indicate that the unemployment rate inversely related to oil price. During the study period oil price variable had a negative impact on unemployment, which is conventional due to the high dependence of the economy on oil. Moreover increasing interest rates reduced Private sector investment and consequently reduce production and increase unemployment. Toda-Yamamoto results indicate that a causal relationship between the unemployment rates and oil prices likewise a causal relationship between interest rates and unemployment rate. The findings of this study may be served as recommendations for policy makers to support and improve the unemployment problem in Iran. |
