The Effect of Hydrotherapy on Health of Cerebral Palsy Patients: An Integrative Review |

Objectives: Hydrotherapy treatment is one type of complementary therapies in the treatment of cerebral palsy. However, it is used less frequently in Iran. The aim of this study was an integrative review of hydrotherapy on the improvement of ICF in spastic diplegia cerebral palsy patients using the review of literature published between 2000 and 2016. Methods: This study was an integrative review. All articles published in Iran and other countries during the last sixteen years on the effect of hydrotherapy with the keywords: hydrotherapy, cerebral palsy, participation, play, motor function, body function and body structure were extracted from bases such as Science direct, PEDro, CINAHL, Pubmed, proquest, magiran and the results were recorded. After evaluating and analyzing the results, the final results were presented in paper form. Results: In this study, more than 33 papers were found in the field of hydrotherapy and cerebral palsy. Of these, 18 articles were eliminated due to unrelated materials and addressing methods other than rehabilitation. Of the remaining 15 papers in the field of the effect of hydrotherapy on improving ICF of spastic diplegia cerebral palsy patients, 4 articles were investigated in the systematic review and were excluded from the study. Finally, the abstracts were initially evaluated and then the full texts of the 11 articles that met the inclusion criteria were investigated. Discussion: The results of the literature review showed that hydrotherapy along with conventional methods has positive effects on all areas of ICF. Hydrotherapy can be used in children and adolescents in accordance with physical and cognitive conditions of the patients along with other rehabilitation methods. However, studies in some areas of ICF are limited and further studies in this field are felt. |
